Well, there are a lot of explanations to describe a perfect car. Looks, dynamics, drivability, safety, performance and engineering excellence are the main ingredients for the purpose. And people do try different ratios of the above ingredients to get a car that suits them the best. But what will you do if u get to know about a car that has everything in it in the best proportions ???
BMWs are always determined to make the perfect driving machines. This dedication and determination made us witness some of the majestic creations of BMW in the past decades. And this time BMW have brought to us the leadership in its purest form. The car that pushes on every luxury sedan buttons. The all new BMW 7 series… While new players in the luxury car segment are trying their luck in the Indian market by introducing technologies and engineering ideas never witnessed before, the old players like the BMW takes their time and keeps bringing in the refreshed versions of their car. And this method of conquering the luxury car market has worked well for the BMW so far. And the new 7 series proves it very well.
The fifth generation 7 series launched in 2008 bids farewell as the new one drives in. BMW sells its long wheel base version in India, hence the name Ld. The wheelbase of the 730 Ld is extended by 140mm over the standard 7 series. Exterior wise There are noticeable variations in the new 7 series compared to the previous version. It seems to look even more better than the previous one.
The most noticeable difference is the refreshed new LED headlamp with the BMW’s signature corona rings and the front bumper gets two smart accent chrome strips. Also the iconic kidney grills gets 9 vertical slats instead of the previous 12 and The side mirrors gets integrated turn indicators. The only difference in the rear portion is an addition of an extra thin chrome strip extending between the rear headlamp reflectors .There is no denying, its love at first sight. The elegant and equally passionate design can take away your breath.
The 7 series boasts to own one of the luxurious interiors ever found in a car. The dashboard is neatly organised ,but feels a bit outdated when compared to its merc rival, the S class. The rear seats are cocooned in luxury features from the future. The extra 140mm of cabin space makes the rear cabin one of the spacious cabins available in the market. Infact it will definitely put you in a dilemma, whether to get into the driving seat or to get yourselves a chauffeur, and enjoy the rear seats. The 9.2 inch flat screen monitor which can be obtained by opting for the rear seat entertainment package, the 1200 watt bang and olufson sound system, the massaging seats, chillers etc etc and the list of features goes on and on. The doors even have an auto shut mechanism so that you don’t have to shut it with a bang, instead the motor sucks the door till its closed. All you have to do is just to give a tap. But its even more interesting to get behind the wheels of one of the ultimate driving machines on the planet.
The 2993 cc 6 cylinder inline diesel engine churns out a whopping 258 bhp and 560 nm torque. Getting behind the wheel and pressing a few buttons and you will be on one of the finest driving seats on earth. However, lately diesel engines have proved to be a thrill killer in some of the high end luxury cars, but the story is quite different here. No drawbacks of a diesel engine can be felt behind the wheels or as a passenger. The ride is sublime, silent and smooth. The engine is mated to a 8 speed automatic transmission which along with the twin turbo power, catapults the 2 tonne mammoth from 0 to 100 kph in less than 7 seconds. And it will keep on whispering till an electronically limited 250 kph.
With features like brake energy regeneration, eco pro mode option and auto start stop, the 7 series promises a decent mileage of around 9 kmpl. The 730 Ld is blessed with a new rear axle which is specially developed for the seven series along with a brand new elastokinetic swing arm bearings that provides a perfect blend of motoring comfort and dynamic driving. The 730 Ld runs on 275/40R19 run flat tyres, which provides you with excellent grip around the corners and can take you to about 250 kms even after getting punctured.
The car can be driven in five different drive modes as the eco pro, comfort, comfort plus, sport, sport plus modes. Eco pro mode concentrates mainly on economy and makes sure that every single drop of diesel is burned thoroughly before exhausting. The both comfort modes makes the suspension softer and gives a lighter steering with slow and steady throttle response. If this doesn’t appeal you, there is a sport and a sport plus modes that can give you some real tyre molesting action around the corners.
The suspension hardens up, steering gets stiffer and The throttle response gets even sharper. But don’t even think for a moment that its close to a sport car. No, not even close. It’s the seventh heaven luxury machine on wheels ,its passionate engineering at its best, one of the best executive luxury sedan ever made. However compared to its petrol CBU model, it lacks some of the exciting features like night vision and ventilated seats.
So, it isn’t the best car you can get with money. Even though, it is assembled in India and have got a lower price tag than its predecessor, some of the fun packed features go missing. And the new Mercedes S class is already causing a serious threat to the 7 series. However, with a price tag of Rs 1.05 crore, and the typical BMW magic in the 7 series have already made the sales graph shoot up. But in the end, time and time only is the best judge to decide who wears the crown at the end of the year.
