So, was the wait worth it?
After a day-long celebration of everything Camaro at Detroit’s Belle Isle, Chevrolet finally took the wraps off of its sixth-generation Camaro. The automaker had been teasing the car for months, showing off images of its engine and silhouette. This drove anticipation to a fever pitch and left many wondering if all the build-up would be worth it. Just so you know, the build-up was worth it. It may not look radically different but it is lighter and there's the option to drop a Corvette engine in it.

You may notice the 2016 Camaro looks skinnier than its fifth-gen sibling. That’s because it’s built on GM’s Alpha platform, the same one shared by the Cadillac ATS and CTS. The Alpha used for the 2016 Camaro is basically original, with 70 percent of it built specifically for the sixth-generation muscle car. The new platform and the addition of lightweight materials, including aluminum, helps the 2016 Camaro lose 200 pounds over the 2015 version. Losing weight is all well and good, but what really matters is what's under the hood.

The 2016 Camaro comes with three engine options. There’s the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the 3.6-liter V6 good for 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque and finally the top-of-the-line 6.2-liter LT1 V8 that drops 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. If that last option looks familiar it's because it sits inside the current Corvette.

Despite having a new platform the 2016 Camaro looks a lot like the 2015 version, save for its slimmer look, cool LED lights and retro Camaro badge. Inside there’s a new flat-bottom steering wheel, 24 ambient lights to select from and dual 8-inch displays on offer. You can check out the gallery of images provided by Chevy along with some exclusive shots from Car and Driver and decide for yourself if the 2016 Camaro truly is a leap forward.
