Top 10 Affordable New Models Of 2016

Last month we brought you the Top 10 Most Anticipated Bikes of 2016. For February, let’s take a look at the most affordable new bikes of 2016, because, well, a lot of the bikes in that other list are pricey: XDiavel, Brutale 800, Super Duke GT … you get the picture. There already exist a lot of motorcycles in the sub-$10k price category, and here’s 10 more new models joining that list. From retro to modernistic, cruiser to sportbike, on-road to off, there’s a little something for everyone in this list.

A few of the prices we had to guesstimate due to the unavailability of an official MSRP, butMO editors have won the Price is Right Showcase Showdown 32 times, so we’re fairly confident in our pricing prognostications. We’ll begin with the most expensive bikes on the list and work our way down. Let’s kick this list off with two very similar new models from Moto Guzzi.

10. Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber & Roamer

At $8,990 the V7 II Stone is the most affordably priced model in the Moto Guzzi lineup, and winner of our HepCat TooCool Millennial Shootout. Producing only 41 horsepower and 40 lb-ft of torque from its 744cc, the V7 II is somewhat underpowered. With the announcement of a new 850cc V-Twin engine – the V9 – powering two new models, Bobber and Roamer, we’re expecting big things from the two new bikes.

9. Indian Scout 60

So impressed were we with the first Indian Scout we named it our 2015 Motorcycle of the Year. For 2016, Indian is following up the success of the Scout with the more affordably priced Scout 60. 6. Yamaha XSR900

The XSR900 is the third iteration utilizing Yamaha’s potent 847cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline three-cylinder. Both the FZ-09 and FJ-09 have won numerous shootouts here at MO and, since the mechanically alike XSR is largely a styling exercise, it should exhibit similar performance qualities and continue the Triple’s winning tradition. Yamaha is releasing the pricing details February 16, but knowing the 2016 FZ-09 retails for an incredibly affordable $8,190, we’d be surprised if the XSR’s price strayed far from that figure. Even Vale seems to think this is a cool new bike.

5. Ducati Scrambler Sixty2

Eight grand for an air-cooled 400cc motorcycle seems a little steep to us, but theScrambler Sixty2 is a Ducati and it’s cool. So, maybe that’s all it needs to demand its premium asking price. It’s $7995 MSRP got it to fifth place in this Top 10, though, so the Sixty2 remains a relatively affordable new model for 2016. But don’t take our word for it. 4. Suzuki SV650

According to Suzuki, the new SV650 is returning to all the elements that made the original SV a cult classic – but with more of everything. The 645cc liquid-cooled V-Twin has been updated with more than 60 new parts, boasting more low-to-mid range horsepower and torque, as well as improved fuel economy and lower emissions. The SV’s updated chassis incorporates more than 70 new parts and components, and when combined with the new steel truss frame, equals a weight reduction of 15 pounds over the previous model.

Like Yamaha and its XSR900, Suzuki is keeping a tight lip on the SV650’s retail price. 3. Honda CBR500R

The 2016 Honda CBR500R was aggressively restyled to more closely resemble itsCBR600RR and CBR1000RR counterparts. In addition to its new styling, the CBR500R also receives new LED headlights and taillights, a lighter muffler design for better mass centralization and an “improved” exhaust note, according to Honda. Other additions include an adjustable front brake lever, smoother gear change feel, a larger fuel tank with hinged cap, and preload-adjustable front suspension. The 2016 Honda CBR500R will be available in Red, Matte Black Metallic and Pearl White, starting in early 2016 with an MSRP of $6,499.

2. BMW G310R

BMW’s forthcoming G310R will be the smallest displacement motorcycle in the OEM’s model lineup since forever. With S1000R styling cues, and powered by a 313cc Single with a slightly rearward canted cylinder and reverse-mounted cylinder head, the G310R is looking to make a splash in the small-displacement category. But, as editor of all things tiny, Troy Siahaan points out in his BMW G310R Versus The World article, the G310R is joining some already established models as well as a few more new ones that will most likely be joining the fun soon. BMW hasn’t announced the G310R’s pricing, but to be competitive against the likes of Honda’s CB300F ($3,999) or KTM’s 390 Duke ($4999) it should be $5k or less (Honda’s CB500F is $5,799). As soon as BMW releases the G310R’s MSRP, we’ll let ya know.

Premam's teaser to be launched on June 11

Alphonse Putharen-directed Premam, which emerged as a true-blue blockbuster in Malayalam filmdom is being remade in telugu directed by Chandoo Mondeti

Naga Chaitanya reprise Nivin Pauly role, while Shruti Haasan will be seen as a Malar teacher, which was originally played by Sai Pallavi. Along with Shruthi hassan two actresses from the original, Anupama Parameswaran and Madonna Sebastian, are part of the remake.

Now the makers are planning to launch first teaser on 11th June as the day marks the wedding anniversary of King Nagarjuna and Amala. But the official confirmation is yet to be made.

Nagarjuna, who is currently gearing up for the shoot of his next has taken time to lend his voice as the narrator in the remake. Apart from giving voice-over, Nagarjuna has also been roped in to play a cameo

The  music is scored by Rajesh Murugesan and Gopisunder. The shooting is going on a brisk phase and is nearing its completion. The makers are planing to release the movie  on August 12.

Premam's Telugu remake all set to release on August 12

Naga Chaitanya and Shruti Haasan starrer Premam, the Telugu remake of Malayalam blockbuster Premam, will hit the screens on August 12.

A coming-of-age love story, the film features Chaitanya in the role of Nivin Pauly, while Shruti Haasan will be seen as a Malar teacher, originally played by Sai Pallavi. This is the first time Chaitanya and Shruti have teamed up and their pairing has raised a lot of eyebrows and anticipation.

Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, the film also stars Anupama Parameswaran and Madonna Sebastian, who were both part of the original movie.

In one of his recent interviews, Chandoo assured fans that the remake will live up to the expectations of the original. Talking about the way the film has panned out, he said that they’ve done full justice to their adaptation.

The college portion, which became a crucial part of the original, was shot in Andhra University in Vizag. He also revealed that Shruti, for the first time in her career, will be seen in saris throughout her portion in the film.

The makers have retained couple of the songs from the original, simple because of their popularity and Chandoo wanted to give these tracks a new spin in his film.

This Kerala man, convicted of child rape in the UK, is on the run in India

Last Tuesday, Judge Peter Ross of the Oxford Crown Court in the United Kingdom found a 29-year old business manager from India guilty on two counts of rape and sentenced him to a prison term of 18 years.

The judgement was delivered in absentia, as Vijesh Kooriyil, the man found guilty of repeatedly raping a six-year-old child, had fled the country the night before.

Kooriyil who boarded a plane to Delhi on Monday night was termed by the judge as a danger to the public. Vijesh however could escape as his bail conditions allowed him to keep his passport with him as he had no prior cautions or convictions.

The man, whom the UK judge has sentenced to at least 12 years in prison before being eligible for parole (18 years total), married a woman from Palakkad in 2014. (The case against him was filed in 2015).

Vijesh Kooriyil, hailing from Malappuram landed in the United Kingdom on a student visa a few years ago and committed the crimes while he was in Oxford. (He was subsequently living in East Sussex). According to the judge, ‘the six-year-old boy was raped twice a week, or even three times a week at the peak of the offending and that went on until December 2011’.

Vijesh finished his schooling in Malappuram and finished his graduation in computer science at a college in Coimbatore.

A staff at the school told The News Minute that he remembered him as a ‘harmless child’, and was shocked when they heard of the heinous crimes he had committed.

Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Allister Tavner told The News Minute, “Kooriyil has been found guilty and sentenced for some extremely serious offences. We are working very closely with the CPS and other authorities in order to locate him, this is in the very early stages but every power available will be used to return him to the UK to serve his sentence”.

What the judge said

“Vijesh Kooriyil deployed the all too familiar ways of gaining a child’s trust. He would often call the boy to come and play with him. Some of those games were innocent enough, but others took place in the defendant’s bedroom,” Judge Peter Ross said during sentencing.

“It was there, having secured the door with string and a nail, that the defendant began to rape a six-year-old, then-seven-year-old boy,” he added. 

Prosecutor David Smith told the court the crimes only came to light after the boy started learning about sex at school and realised what had happened to him. “He started to feel ashamed about what had happened to him, it made him feel angry and confused. He is very suspicious, not with children, but with adults. He cannot understand why he did such a thing to him,” he said.

Kooriyil was summoned by post to attend Oxford Crown Court for trial and attended on November 13 last year to deny both charges. But he failed to turn up on Tuesday, having ‘misled his solicitors’ and fled the country, before the judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

The Mirror UK reported that Judge Peter Ross was upset with the Crown Prosecution Service for charging Vijesh with just two counts of rape, as the abuse was much more sustained.

The judge said: "The indictment that has been prepared by the Crown is inadequate – it allows only to sentence on the basis of two incidents of rape. This is frustrating, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Hillary Clinton has clinched the Democratic nomination for US president after reaching the required number of delegates, an AP tally suggests.

The count puts Mrs Clinton on 2,383 - the number needed to make her the presumptive nominee.

She will become the first female nominee for a major US political party.

But rival Bernie Sanders said Mrs Clinton had not won as she was dependent on superdelegates who could not vote until July's party convention.

Mrs Clinton reached the threshold with a big win in Puerto Rico and a burst of last-minute support from superdelegates, AP said late on Monday night.

Superdelegates are party insiders who can pledge their support for a candidate ahead of the convention but do not formally vote for them until the convention itself.

George Washington was elected president of a newly independent America in 1789. Forty-four men later (43 of them white) Hillary Clinton makes history today by being the first female nominee for the White House.

So why don't I feel more excited?

The lack of exuberance may come from the fact that this has all been going on for so long.

We've really been reworking a version of the "first viable female candidate for the presidency" story since 20 January 2007, the first time Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy for the White House.

We're exhausted. We've run out of superlatives. We've overused every anecdote from the former first lady, former senator, former secretary's well-covered life.

A woman president would be new, Hillary Clinton is not.

Why aren't we more excited about Clinton?

At an appearance in Long Beach, California, shortly after the news broke, she said: "We are on the brink of a historic and unprecedented moment but we still have work to do.

"We have six elections tomorrow and we're going to fight hard for every single vote, especially right here in California."

Voters will go to the polls for Democratic primaries on Tuesday in California, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and New Jersey.

The nominee for either party is not officially named until the parties' respective conventions.

BBC North America editor Jon Sopel says the AP announcement could actually be a problem for Mrs Clinton, as it may depress turnout in Tuesday's primaries and creates the impression that she has only won because of the superdelegates and not the ordinary voters.

Sanders' California vow

Mr Sanders has vowed to stay in the race until the convention, and his campaign team said the Vermont senator would attempt to win back superdelegates.

His spokesman Michael Briggs said it was too early to call the contest.

"It's not complicated" - US media round-up

Philip Bump in the Washington Post unpicks the maths of the AP count, saying: "This is a subject of great consternation to rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, who... has repeatedly suggested that media outlets who point this out are irresponsibly abdicating their duty to their audiences. But it's not a complicated issue. If you accept that Donald Trump has clinched the Republican nomination, you should similarly accept that Clinton will seal her party's nomination on Tuesday."

Amy Chozick and Patrick Healy in the New York Times say: "Mrs Clinton must also work in the coming weeks to improve her own standing with voters, both with Mr. Sanders's hordes of young supporters and with a majority of registered voters who say they do not like or trust her."

Philip Elliot in Time quickly turned to the forthcoming presidential campaign, saying it will be "ugly". "Trump has invoked the scandals - and the faux-scandals -of the 1990s and has cast the current incarnation of Clinton as a "crooked" politician... He has shown little regard for her lifetime in the public eye... and has been devastating in his criticism. All which goads his massive audiences into rage against Clinton."

AP reports White House officials as saying that Mr Obama is preparing to endorse Mrs Clinton in the next few days, although the announcement would come after Tuesday's primaries.

Mr Obama telephoned Mr Sanders on Sunday, AP said. The contents of the call have not been revealed.

Speaking in San Francisco, Mr Sanders did not refer to the AP count, and promised supporters he would win in California: "As of today, we have won primaries and caucuses in 20 states across this country.

"And tomorrow, in the most important primary in the whole Democratic nominating process, we're going to win here in California."

On 26 May, Donald Trump passed the number of delegates needed to secure the Republican Party's presidential nomination, AP reported.
