Wife of Bangladeshi anti-terrorism policeman stabbed, shot dead

The wife of a senior Bangladeshi police official known for battling Islamist militants was stabbed and shot to death today, and machete-wielding assailants killed a Christian grocer in a separate incident.

Both attacks appeared to be the work of Islamist militants who have killed at least 30 people, including religious minorities, liberal bloggers and academics, since February last year, police said.

Three assailants riding a motorcycle stabbed and then shot Mahmuda Aktar, 33, while she was on her way to put her son onto a school bus near her home in the southeastern port city of Chittagong, police said.

"She was stabbed first. Then they shot her in the head three times," Humayan Kabir, deputy police commissioner of Chittagong, told Reuters.

Her husband, police superintendent Babul Aktar, has played an important role in cracking down on militants in the region.

"Babul Aktar is an efficient police officer and played a key role in apprehending Islamists. They might have killed his wife because they failed to get him," Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters.

Aktar, who was recently posted to police headquarters in the capital, Dhaka, busted several hideouts of the banned group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen. His team also arrested one of the group's leaders, who was later killed in a grenade blast during a police raid in October.

GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES CRACKDOWN ON MILITANT GROUPS

The government has launched a crackdown on militant groups who want to impose strict Islamic law on Bangladesh, whose population of 160 million are mostly moderate Muslims.

In Sunday's other killing, Sunil Gomes, a 60-year-old shopkeeper, was hacked to death in his shop in the northern district of Natore, local police official Manirul Islam said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for killing Gomes, according to the U.S.-based monitoring service SITE.

Islamic State and al Qaeda have claimed responsibility for many killings in the past but the government denies either group has a presence in Bangladesh and says home-grown radicals are responsible.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam told Reuters in an interview last month that Islamic State was trying to ride a wave of religious radicalisation by falsely claiming killings, and said there was enough evidence implicating domestic militant groups.

India's Test captain Virat Kohli has dropped out of ICC's top-10 list for batsmen in the five-day format, but R Ashwin's remarkable outing in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka helped him earn a place to eighth in bowling while holding the second spot in the all-rounders' rankings. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara finished his glorious career at seventh spot while another illustrious retiree, Australian captain Michael Clarke has finished his 115-Test career in 25th spot. (Related: Sangakkara's emotional farewell)

Sangakkara, who scored 32 and 18 in Sri Lanka's 278 runs defeat at the P Sara Oval, first reached No. 1 in the Test batting rankings in December 2007 against England after innings of 92 and 152 in Kandy.

Sangakkara spent a total of 97 Tests and 812 days as the No. 1 Test batsman in the world and was last number-one in December 2014, before losing the top spot to AB de Villiers. His highest-ever points tally was 938, achieved on 1 December 2007, and that total is the highest-ever achieved by a Sri Lanka batsman to date and the joint sixth-highest of all-time.

While Clarke surged to the top of the rankings in August 2009 and did so for the last time in February 2013. During this period, he topped the batting rankings on several occasions (totalling 11 Tests and 70 days).

Clarke is one of the 30 internationals, including eight Australia batsmen, to reach 900 points, which was incidentally his highest points tally that was achieved after the 2012 Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka.

The other big movers in the latest batting rankings are India's Ajinkya Rahane (up two places to a career-high 20th), Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne (up two to 34th) and England's Moeen Ali (up two to a career-high 48th), while Lokesh Rahul (up 30 places to 87th) and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha (up 15 places to 100th) also climbed up the ladder.

In the ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Australia's Mitchell Johnson has gained two spots to sixth after recording match figures of four for 86 in London, while Ashwin's match tally of seven for 118 in Colombo has helped the off-spinner overtake Rangana Herath into eighth place on 769 points.

The biggest mover in the bowling rankings, though, was India leg-spinner Amit Mishra, whose match haul of seven for 72 has helped him move up 42 places to a career-high 39th.

Ashwin has also gained ground on Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan in the rankings for all-rounders and has reduced the deficit on the leader to 43 points.

Matt Prior: England wicketkeeper retires from cricket 2015

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

The 33-year-old, who won 79 Test caps, helped England to three Ashes series victories between 2009 and 2013.

The Sussex gloveman has not played any cricket since July 2014 because of a recurring Achilles tendon injury.

"I was expecting to be fit for the 2015 season," said Prior. "Unfortunately, this has proved impossible, and I have now had to reach this decision."

He added: "I feel honoured to have played for Sussex and England as many times as I have and shared so many great times with both teams. I also feel privileged to have been involved in an era of such success for English cricket.

"I have always tried to play with pride and passion and have a deep belief that the team will always come first. Although I haven't achieved all the goals I had set out to, I feel immensely proud of what I have done in my career. Sadly it is now time to move on."

Prior became the first England wicketkeeper to score a century on debut, hitting an unbeaten 126 at Lord's against West Indies in 2007.

He leaves the game with a Test batting average of 40.18, the highest of any England wicketkeeper to claim more than 100 dismissals  and the third best of all-time behind only Kumar Sangakkara, Andy Flower and Adam Gilchrist.

The South African-born right-hander was named England's player of the year in 2013 after saving the final Test and series against New Zealand by batting for four-and-a-half hours on his way to an unbeaten century.

By that time, he had been appointed vice-captain and attempted to win a fourth Ashes series in Australia in 2013-14.

But his form dipped - he made only one fifty in eight Tests - and was dropped for the final two Tests of the 5-0 whitewash in Australia.

Despite his bludgeoning batting style, Prior could not replicate his Test form in one-day internationals, averaging 24.18 runs in 68 matches.

In December 2014, he co-founded the new professional One Pro Cycling team, saying cycling was a "huge passion".
